What is an ROV pilot technician?

An ROV pilot technician operates and helps maintain remotely operated underwater vehicles used for inspection, construction, survey and subsea intervention. The role combines vehicle piloting, electronics, hydraulics, maintenance, troubleshooting and offshore operational awareness.

How do I become an ROV pilot?

A typical route is to choose an appropriate ROV pilot technician training program, complete theory and practical training, develop equipment and troubleshooting skills, meet the assessment requirements, and then build operational experience in the offshore or subsea industry.

Do I need commercial diving experience?

Not necessarily. ROV operations are distinct from commercial diving. Requirements depend on the selected ROV course and employer, so confirm the current criteria with MECD.

How much does an ROV pilot course cost?

ROV course fees vary according to course level, duration, practical and simulator training, assessment and certification arrangements. Contact MECD for the current fee and intake information for the specific ROV course.

Does ROV training include simulator practice?

Yes. Simulator practice is an important part of ROV training because it allows trainees to develop piloting, observation, mission and operational skills in a controlled environment before working offshore. MECD's ROV training includes simulator-based practical training.

Can experienced ROV pilots pursue assessment or supplementary training?

MECD provides supplementary ROV training and assessment-oriented routes. Experienced personnel should discuss their existing competence and documentation with MECD to determine the appropriate pathway.
