Question 1

What is an ROV pilot technician and what do they do?

Accepted Answer

An ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) pilot technician operates, maintains and troubleshoots underwater robotic vehicles used for offshore inspection, construction and subsea intervention work — one of the most respected and highly paid roles in the offshore industry.

Question 2

Do I need previous diving or electronics experience for the ROV course?

Accepted Answer

No prior diving or electronics background is required for the ROV Pilot Technician Grade 2 course. Our instructors teach fiber optics, electronics, sonar and offshore awareness from the fundamentals up, following IMCA R002, R010, C005 R04, SNR04, SNR1005 and TEL2001 standards.

Question 3

What makes MECD's ROV training different?

Accepted Answer

MECD was the first training provider in the region to achieve IMCA T2 ROV Training Establishment membership. Training combines real electronics/soldering bench work with an IMCA Class B-compliant multi-ROV simulator featuring 18 missions, giving you hands-on piloting hours before you ever step offshore.

Question 4

Can experienced ROV pilots upgrade their certification at MECD?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our ROV Grade Assessment (COC) route lets working ROV pilots be assessed on their existing workplace competencies, with evidence collected and independently verified for certification — no need to repeat basic training.

Question 5

Is ROV pilot technician a good career path?

Accepted Answer

Yes. ROV piloting is consistently ranked among the best-paid offshore careers, with strong global demand across oil & gas, offshore wind, and subsea construction, salvage and inspection projects.
