How do I become a commercial diver?

Start by choosing an appropriate commercial diving training route, confirming the entry and medical requirements, completing classroom and practical in-water training, and meeting the assessment and certification requirements of the selected program. MECD offers commercial diving programs including Surface Supplied Air Diver training.

What are the requirements for a commercial diver course?

Requirements depend on the course. Applicants should expect identity and application documents and, for in-water commercial diving programs, evidence of medical fitness for diving and the physical ability required by the program. Confirm the exact requirements with MECD admissions before registration.

How much does commercial diving training cost?

Commercial diving course fees vary by program, duration, equipment, practical training and certification route. MECD should be contacted for the current fee and intake information for the specific course you want to take.

What is the difference between commercial diving and recreational scuba diving?

Recreational scuba is primarily for leisure and personal underwater activities. Commercial diving is occupational diving performed as part of professional work, with formal procedures, equipment, supervision, training and workplace safety requirements appropriate to the job.

What certification do commercial divers need?

The required training and certification depend on the diving role, depth, equipment and employer or industry requirements. MECD provides commercial diving training aligned with applicable IMCA/IDSA-oriented training frameworks and offers several specialized commercial diving programs.
